Foumban is a city in western Cameroon with approx. 113,100 inhabitants (2001). It is the historical, political, religious and cultural center of the Bamum people and the traditional capital of the Kingdom of Bamum , the southernmost sultanate of Cameroon. It is also the administrative capital of what is now the Noun department .

The Sultan's Palace of Foumban

The city houses the Sultan's Palace built by King Njoya , which is architecturally based on north German brick construction . The king had the palace built based on the German postcards that an expeditionary force of the German military had brought with them. The palace functions to this day as the seat of the sultan and king in one person. It also houses the historical museum of the Bamun people, in which numerous traditional costumes, weapons and furniture are exhibited.

The largest and most important mosque of the Bamum (built in 1956) is within walking distance of the palace . Every Friday the Sultan, accompanied by his court, leaves the palace in a ceremonial procession to attend the traditional Friday prayer.

The center of town is also surrounded by a large market for food and traditional craftsmanship of Bamun coined.
