The Foxtrail is a tourist scavenger hunt that is offered for playful exploration of cities in Switzerland and Europe. The name Foxtrail , based on the clever foxes, is intended to refer to this quality demanded by the pursuers. The Foxtrail is a mixture of sightseeing , scavenger hunt and escape game .

history

Foxtrail was invented in 2001 by the Swiss Alfred "Fredy" Wiederkehr in Thun . Wiederkehr, who was head of economic development for a tourist region at the time , founded Swisscovery GmbH in 2001, based in Lucerne . He also developed six test trails on Lake Thun (Thun, Spiez , Interlaken ). In 2002 the first Foxtrail was put into operation in Thun. In 2010, the first online closing post, which took photos of the Foxtrail chasing teams, was set up in Basel . Further Foxtrails followed in Bern , Canton Aargau (cooperation with the Museum Aargau ), Lausanne , Lugano , Canton Jura . In 2013 the first Castle Foxtrail was inaugurated at Lenzburg Castle . In 2016 the first Velotrail , the "RollingFox", was opened in Bern .

In 2017 the first mountain trail in Lenzerheide , a district in Winterthur , a first indoor Foxtrail in Zurich's main train station , the first EnergyFox in Thun and the first Foxtrail abroad in Helsinki were inaugurated.

In 2018, Wiederkehr sold Swisscovery GmbH to Central Outdoor Holding AG , and Nikolaus Pichler was appointed managing director. In the same year, new international Foxtrails were added in Berlin , Nuremberg and London . Wiederkehr will be active as chief developer until the end of 2019.

In 2019, the Foxtrail will also continue to expand internationally: Rome and Paris will be added. WWF and Foxtrail open a "Laggs-Trail" ( salmon trail) in Basel.

Various brands with the term Foxtrail , some with the slogan The most exciting scavenger hunt or Play with the city , are held by Swisscovery GmbH and Central Outdoor Holding AG for Switzerland and the EU .

concept

The Foxtrail is booked by a group. The documents will then be sent by email. The start and finish of the trail are at or near the respective train station, where there is also a sales point for the tickets.

Each trail is tailored to the respective location with its geographical characteristics and puzzles, while the procedure is similar due to the starting documents: In order not to lose the trail of the "fox" through the city, codes have to be cracked together and hidden messages found along the way you can find the next post. If you get stuck, you can call the helpline.

The trail is usually done on foot, but sometimes public transport has to be used. As of 2019, there are around 50 different trails in Switzerland and around 160,000 participants annually.
