Brother Alois Löser, Prior of the Taizé Community (2013)

Frère Alois Löser (French frère "brother"; born June 11, 1954 in Nördlingen ) has been the prior of the ecumenical brotherhood of Taizé since August 2005 and successor to the founder Roger Schutz .

biography

Brother Alois' real name is Alois Löser. He grew up in Stuttgart . Brother Alois has two siblings, an older brother and a younger sister. His parents came from the Egerland as refugees . His father was a Wagner ( wheelwright ) and tram conductor, his mother looked after the family as a housewife . In his youth he was engaged as an altar boy and youth leader in the Catholic parish of St. Nikolaus ( Stuttgart-Ost ) .

Brother in Taizé

In 1970 Alois Löser came to Taizé for the first time. He was fascinated by Brother Roger, the prior of the religious community, who was able to "express very clearly in his own way" that "God is love and that his love does not depend on us." After a period of being permanent (like young people who help out in Taizé for a longer period of time) he joined the Taizé Community in 1974 at the age of 19 . Brother Alois made his final promise of ties to the Taizé Community on August 6, 1978, the anniversary of the death of Pope Paul VI. and the feast day of the transfiguration of the Lord .

Prior of Taizé

After the murder of Brother Rogers on August 16, 2005, he succeeded him as prior . According to the Taizé order, the latter appoints his successor himself: Brother Roger did so eight years before his death. Brother Alois was originally supposed to take over the office of Prior of the Community at the end of 2005, but in recent years he had already represented the founder and prior of the Taizé ecumenical community, Roger Schutz, in many events. Frère Alois gradually became well known, on the one hand through his numerous radio and television interviews , on the other hand through his musical activity: many of the new chants from Taizé were composed by himself . Pope Benedict XVI received Brother Alois annually for a private audience during his tenure. On April 4, 2019, the prior of Taizé was received for the sixth time by the incumbent Pope Francis , topics are always the ecumenical path and the youth meetings of the community.

Quote

On May 8, 2005, the Sunday newspaper Bayern asked Brother Alois “What comes after Brother Roger?”. His answer:

“The question naturally arises. Brother Roger always guided us to live in today. It's about joy, simplicity, mercy. These are the cornerstones, and with them we can go on and receive all guests who come. We always have to reinvent what that looks like in detail. "
