The Fröhnder knocking saw or knocking saw Fröhnd is a historical knocking saw in the district of Holz bei Fröhnd in the Wiesental .

history

With the abolition of the St. Blasien monastery , its monopoly on mills and sawmills (Zwing- und Bannmühlen and saws) also ceased. This enabled investment and presumably led to the construction of the Fröhnder knocking saw in 1808. The technique of knocking saws was widespread until around 1840 and was then replaced by high-rise saws and later frame saws , as these techniques enabled a much greater sawing capacity per day. In Fröhnd, the saw was still being used by a part-time sawmaker from the municipality until the 1950s. In 1970 and 1981, the old knocking saw was saved from deterioration through a private initiative. The saw was renovated from 1981 to 1993.

Today the knock saw is advertised for tourism and from May to October demonstrations take place on Sundays and public holidays, which are carried out by the Friends of Knock Saw . Otherwise, the knocking saw is freely accessible all year round, but cannot be seen in operation.

Plant description

The knocking saw is based on an old sketch by Villard de Honnecourt from the 13th century, where instead of an undershot one, an overshot water wheel with a diameter of 3 meters was used, which is driven by the Künabach . The saw hall has the dimensions 18 × 4.5 meters. The hipped gable roof is covered with around 16,600 wooden shingles. The water is led to the water wheel via a wooden channel with a 50 cm gradient. The corrugated tree is made of oak and about 5.35 meters long with a diameter of 53 cm. The saw could cut about 1.50 cubic feet of lumber per day, while newer saws are 25 times as efficient.
