Fractale ( Japanese フ ラ ク タ ル , Furakutaru ) is the title of a manga that was published from September 2010 to November 2011 and was drawn by Mutsumi Akasaki . It was created in connection with the anime television series of the same name , which was shown on Japanese television in early 2011. The plot, which is both the basis of the manga and the anime, was written by the cultural critic Hiroki Azuma in collaboration with the screenwriter Mari Okada and the director of the series Yutaka Yamamoto . The animation of the series running in the broadcast block noitaminA was created by the studios A-1 Pictures and Ordet .

action

The action takes place in a distant future, which, however, is already past its prime. In this, the boy Clain grows up under the care of so-called doubles who take care of him instead of his parents. In the process, it becomes clear that almost every person has such a 'robot' as a substitute, who takes on any uncomfortable work in his place. Their existence can be traced back to the Fractale system , which is responsible for the creation of the holographs. Clain feels more attracted to what he sees as nostalgic things that existed before Fractale was developed.

On an excursion Clain meets Phryne, who appears mysterious to him, a somewhat older-looking girl who is on the run from a group of pursuers. He can follow her and soon both can make friends. This prompts her to seek refuge with Clain. Despite all the joy of the first encounter, Phryne disappears into the night, but leaves behind something that Clain does not really know how to appreciate.

Characters

Clain ( ク レ イ ン , Kurein )
He is a rather reserved boy with a keen interest in things that existed before the Fractale system. Accordingly, he is used to dealing with older technologies, but soon finds himself confronted with a major change in his life. He soon finds out more about the background of the slowly ending fractal and quickly makes new friends with Phryne, Nessa and a group of revolutionaries. Due to his proximity to the main female characters, he is only too happy to be referred to as a pervert, which he, the inexperienced boy, is extremely embarrassed.
Phryne ( フ リ ュ ネ , Furyune )
Phryne is the daughter of a priest and is on the run from her 'family'. As it turns out, however, Phryne is not the only daughter; she is even surrounded by a multitude of herself, as she has been cloned en masse. She herself is extremely stubborn, quickly falls into anger and is always very revealing because she does not feel any shame. Over time, she developed a close relationship with Clain and Nessa.
Nessa ( ネ ッ サ )
Nessa is a twin of Phryne and is her younger counterpart. In contrast to other doubles, Clain can see and touch her directly if her mood allows it. She is extremely energetic, loves to laugh and to go on expeditions, whereby she involuntarily brings Clain into difficult situations, but without intending to do so.

Origin and publications

Fractale was designed directly as a franchise and so the various media were planned in advance and the authors of the plot were shared.

Manga

Even before the anime was broadcast, the manga began to be published . It is drawn by Mutsumi Akasaki and started in the online magazine Gangan Online from Square Enix on September 30, 2010. After the illustrator had arguments with Yutaka Yamamoto in the summer of 2011, the manga ended on November 17, 2011 after 13 chapters. Two chapter summaries as Tankōbon were published on January 22, 2011 and July 22, 2011.

Anime

The eleven episode anime television series Fractale was produced in a collaboration between A-1 Pictures and Ordet . The director took Yutaka Yamamoto . He also worked out the plot with cultural critic Hiroki Azuma and screenwriter Mari Okada . The animation management was taken over by Masako Tashiro , who derived the character design from the drafts of the illustrator Hidari, but also made some major changes. The presentation deviated from the original concept relatively strongly.

The series first aired on Fuji Television on the night of January 14, 2011 (the previous day of television ) and ended on April 1. A few days to weeks after the broadcast began, the stations KTV , THK , Sakuranbo Television and BS-Fuji began broadcasting. A second broadcast period is set for April 2011.

In addition to being broadcast on television, the series was also offered as a streaming service from Funimation in North America, which was available about an hour after it was first broadcast. Due to a complaint from the production committee about illegal distribution, the broadcast had to be temporarily suspended. The series was later allowed to continue broadcasting after Funimation showed efforts to counter the illegal distribution of the series.

music

Down by the salley gardens my love and I did meet;
She passed the salley gardens with little snow-white feet.
She bid me take love easy, as the leaves grow on the tree;
But I, being young and foolish, with her did not agree.

In a field by the river my love and I did stand,
And on my leaning shoulder she placed her snow-white hand.
She bid me take life easy, as the grass grows on the weirs;
But I was young and foolish, and now am full of tears.

Down by the Salley Gardens by William Butler Yeats

The background music for the anime was composed and arranged by Sōhei Shikano. A short version of the title Harinezumi ( ハ リ ネ ズ ミ , Eng . " Hedgehog ") was played in the opening credits, which alluded to the title and has numerous animations of fractals . The credits used the title Salley Gardens ( サ リ ー ガ ー デ ン ), which is a reinterpretation of the piece Down by the Salley Gardens written by William Butler Yeats in 1889 . The title was recorded in both an English and a Japanese version. Both titles, or all three versions, were sung by Hitomi Azuma . The opening credits and the English version of the credits were released as a single on March 9, 2011 on Epic / Sony Records .

novel

Hiroki Azuma wrote the serial novel Fractale / Reloaded ( フ ラ ク タ ル / リ ロ ー デ ッ ド , Furakutaru / Rirōdeddo ) for the franchise, which was published from January 6 to April 6, 2011 in Media Factory's literary magazine Da Vinci (issues 2/2011 to 5/2011). This takes place around 200 years later compared to the anime.
