François-Marie de Broglie, 1st Duke de Broglie (pronunciation of the name like French breuil ) (born January 11, 1671 in Paris , † May 22, 1745 ) was a French general, Marshal of France .

His father Victor-Maurice, comte de Broglie (1647-1727) was also Marshal of France, his mother was his wife Marie de Lamoignon (1645-1733).

Life and accomplishments

François-Marie de Broglie took part in all campaigns in Germany, Italy and Flanders from 1689 onwards, and in 1714 became governor of Mont-Dauphin and general director of the cavalry and in 1724 plenipotentiary of London.

Recalled in 1731, he was assigned to Villars' army in Italy in 1733 , over which he was appointed Marshal in 1734 and was given supreme command alongside Marshal Coigny . He fought with this the victories in the battle of Parma and the battle of Guastalla .

After the peace he received the governorate in Alsace and fought in the War of the Austrian Succession under Charles Louis Auguste Fouquet de Belle-Isle , with whom he took Prague on November 26, 1741 , and which he later followed in the high command of the Bohemian Army. In 1742 he was made 1st Duke of Broglie. But he fell out of favor because he led the weakened army back across the Rhine against the wishes of the court, and retired to his possessions, which had been elevated to the Duchy of Broglie by the Barony Ferrières, where he died on May 22, 1745. Heir to the ducal title was his son Victor-François de Broglie .
