François de Franquetot, duc de Coigny

François de Franquetot, duc de Coigny (born March 16, 1670 Coigny Castle in Coutances , † December 18, 1759 ) was Marshal of France , Count and since 1747 Duke of Coigny. From 1704 to 1734 he was Colonel général des dragons.

Life

Coigny de Franquetot comes from a family of soldiers, his father was already a high officer and his uncle Charles-Auguste de Goyon-Matignon (1647–1739) Marshal of France. François de Franquetot decided to do military service. He joined the Musketeers at the age of 17 and quickly made a career. In 1690 he was captain and wounded in the battle of Fleurus . In 1691 he was promoted to Mestre de camp . At the beginning of the Spanish War of Succession he was transferred to Flanders to Louis-François de Boufflers in January 1702 to the Brigadier des armées du roi , and in 1703 promoted to Maréchal de camp . In 1704 he was given the post of Colonel général des dragons and in 1709 that of Lieutenant général . During the battle of Malplaquet he was able to distinguish himself as commander of the Régiment Royal-Piémont cavalerie .

In 1719 he was in the war of the Quadruple Alliance in support of Philip V in Spain, where he took part in the siege of Hondarribia and San Sebastian with General James Fitzjames .

In the Polish War of Succession from 1733 to 1738, he fought with François-Marie de Broglie against the Austrians. In the Battle of Parma in June 1734 and the Battle of Guastalla in September 1734 he was able to defeat the Austrians in Italy with him. He was appointed Marshal of France on June 14, 1734 . In October 1735 he was defeated in the battle near Klausen by the Austrians under Friedrich Heinrich von Seckendorff .

In the subsequent War of the Austrian Succession from 1740 to 1748, he succeeded de Broglie in 1743. He defeated the Austrians in the Battle of Weissenburg on July 5, 1744 and was able to occupy Freiburg . The largest city in Upper Austria fell into French hands. In the winter of 1744/45 he was able to stay in Swabia .

In 1747 he was made Duke of Coigny. His wife was Henriette de Montbourcher. In 1748 his son died in a duel . The Marshal then concentrated on the administration of his possessions. In 1756 he passed it on to his grandson Henri de Franquetot, duc de Coigny . Coigny de Franquetot died a little later in 1759.

Coigny de Franquetot's parents were the General Robert Jean Antoine Franquetot, comte de Coigny († 1704) and Marie Françoise Goyon de Matignon (1648-1719). On December 4, he married Henriette de Montbourcher du Bordage (* 1671; October 8, 1751). The couple had the following children:
