François Debon
François-Hippolyte Debon (born December 2, 1807 in Paris ; † February 29, 1872 there ) was a French history painter, caricaturist and creator of small sculptures.
He received his first painting lessons from his mother, the porcelain painter Sophie Debon, b. Bompart (1787-1838). He then became a student of Antoine-Jean Gros and Alexandre Abel de Pujol . From 1825 he studied at the École des beaux-arts de Paris .
In the period from 1835 to 1870 he exhibited mostly historical pictures at the Salon de Paris . He also supplied satirical drawings to the Parisian magazines, and also created small sculptures made of metal. His works were awarded third class medals in 1844 and second class medals in 1835 and 1868.
Charles Baudelaire praised his painting “ The Battle of Hastings ” : “What talent, what energy! This is a real battle!”. This painting was damaged in the fire of the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Caen in 1905 .
