François Flameng

François Léopold Flameng (born December 6, 1856 in Paris , † February 28, 1923 there ) was a French painter.

Life

Flameng was a son of the painter Léopold Flameng (1831-1911), from whom he also received his first artistic lessons. With the support of his father, Flameng came to the École des Beaux-Arts in his hometown and was there a. a. with Pierre Hédouin pupil of Alexandre Cabanel .

In 1875, at the age of 19, Flameng was invited to take part in the major annual exhibition of the Salon de Paris . His painting “Le Lutrin”, which was submitted for this purpose, received a commendation from the jury.

In 1905 Flameng was appointed lecturer at the Académie des Beaux-Arts . A few years later he was accepted there as a member and was even president of the Académie for some time. War Minister Alexandre Millerand appointed Flameng to be the “official French war painter ” during the First World War . Through this task he was elected honorary president of the Société des peintres militaire français after the end of the war . The American National Academy of Design elected François Flameng an honorary member ( Honorary NA ) in 1919 .

During the First World War, he became one of the most important official French war painters. In his watercolors and gouches, the artist mainly depicted everyday life as a soldier, prisoners of war, ruins and calm landscapes.
