François Loeser (born August 25, 1958 in Mulhouse ) is a French mathematician.

François Loeser, Oberwolfach 2013

Loeser studied from 1978 at the École normal supérieure (ENS). In 1983 he submitted his Thèse de troisieme cycle and in 1988 his Thèse d'Etat (both part of the doctoral procedure in France). From 1985 to 1989 he was Chargé de Recherches of the CNRS at the École polytechnique . In 1989 he became professor at the University of Paris VI (Pierre et Marie Curie) and in 2000 professor at the ENS.

Loeser deals with algebraic geometry and arithmetic geometry, for example he developed a theory of motivic integration with the Belgian mathematician Jan Denef in the late 1990s (a concept that goes back to Maxim Kontsevich ). In 2014 he was invited speaker at the ICM in Seoul (Definability in non-archimedean geometry).

From 1992 to 1997 he was a junior member of the Institut Universitaire de France. In 2007 he received the Freycinet Prize from the French Academy of Sciences. In 2008 he gave a plenary lecture at the European Congress of Mathematicians in Amsterdam ( The Geometry behind non-archimedean integrals ). He is a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society and has been a member of the Academia Europaea since 2019 .

His PhD students include Julien Sebag and (with Denef) Johannes Nicaise .
