François Roth (historian)

François Roth (born February 16, 1936 in Gien , Loiret department , † May 5, 2016 in Nancy ) was a French historian .

François Roth studied at the Sorbonne from 1954 to 1959 , primarily with Pierre Renouvin . At first he worked as a high school teacher. Since 1964 he was assistant and since 1970 maître de conférences at the University of Nancy . There he completed his habilitation in 1973 and received the title of professor. From 1998 to 2002 he taught as a professor of history contomporaine ( contemporary history ) at the University of Nancy. He married in 1964. The Académie des sciences morales et politiques honored him in 1990 with the Prix Maurice Baumont. Roth was a member of the board of the Franco-German historians' committee from 1996 to 2000 . From 1998 to 2000 he was President of the Franco-German Association of Scientists. Roth was a full member of the Académie nationale de Metz and the Académie de Stanislas in Nancy. Roth died in May 2016 as a result of a traffic accident.

Roth published numerous works on the history of Lorraine in the 19th and 20th centuries. His habilitation thesis La Lorraine annexée 1870–1918 , published in 1976, became a fundamental work on this subject. Roth updated them in 2007 and again in 2011.
