John Bernard Riley (* 11. June 1954 in Aberdeen , Maryland ) is an American jazz - drummer and music teacher. Riley played with musicians of modern and fusion jazz such as Woody Herman , Stan Getz , Milt Jackson , Miles Davis , Dizzy Gillespie , John Scofield , Kenny Werner , Gary Peacock , Mike Stern , John Patitucci and Bob Berg .

Riley, whose mother was a piano player, started playing drums at the age of 8 after being given a snare drum as a gift. In the fourth grade he took private lessons from Thomas Sicola jr. As a student he played in rock bands . He studied music at the University of North Texas College of Music in Denton, Texas . During this time he recorded the title Lab 76 with the One O'Clock Lab Band led by Leon Breeden , which was nominated for the Grammy Award "Best Jazz Performance by a Big Band". Riley received his Bachelor of Music degree there in 1975.

He then worked with Milt Jackson (1976-77), Woody Herman (1978) and Rich Boukas (1979-1982). In 1985, he graduated with a Master of Music from the Manhattan School of Music . He also worked for Joe Lovano (from 1984) and Bob Mintzer (from 1986). Since 1978 he has played at European festivals, since 1989 also at Japanese. He also worked with the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band and the WDR Big Band Cologne .

Riley is currently the drummer with the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra in New York, which emerged from the Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Orchestra . He has authored several books on drumming.
