François Roussel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

François Roussel (also Francesco Rosselli ; * around 1510, † after 1577) was probably a French composer of the Renaissance who belongs to the Roman School . Since his works were published under his Italian name form, he was mostly regarded as Italian by older researchers, but he was referred to in an accounting book as Franciscum Roussel gallum , which suggests his French origin.

life and work

Nothing is known precisely about its origin. Possibly he came to Rome as a choir boy . In 1544 he was first mentioned as a musician in the entourage of Cardinal Alessandro Farnese . From 1548 to 1550 he can be traced as magister puerorum of the Cappella Giulia at St. Peter's Basilica . He may have worked in Lyon in the 1550s . From 1564 he can be traced back to Rome, first until 1566 as maestro di cappella to San Lorenzo in Damaso , then in the same position from 1566 to 1571 to San Luigi dei Francesi and finally from 1572 to 1575 to San Giovanni in Laterano .

Roussel's spiritual work is relatively narrow and mostly only handed down by hand. In contrast, his broad oeuvre of secular works appeared in print early on. As a madrigal composer , he is one of the earliest representatives of the so-called note-nere spelling, which is characterized by a wealth of tempo and rhythmic diversity. His mostly four-part chansons are also characterized by a madrigalistic style of composition. His art was held in high regard by his contemporaries such as Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina and Loys Bourgeois .
