Franc Ksaver Meško, Catholic priest * Slovenian writer and poet

Franc Ksaver Meško (born October 28, 1874 Klučarovci near Friedau, today Ormož , † January 11, 1964 in Slovenj Gradec ) was a Slovenian Catholic priest and writer.

Life

Meško came from a farming family. He attended the lower level of the grammar school in Pettau , the upper level in Cilli . After a long period of reflection, he decided to study theology in Marburg and Klagenfurt , where he was ordained a priest in 1898. He had pastoral positions and a. in Sankt Kanzian am Klopeiner See and in Maria Gail in Carinthia . During the First World War he was accused of high treason in 1916 and imprisoned. Before the Carinthian referendum in 1920 he had to flee Carinthia and did not return afterwards. From 1921 Meško was pastor in Sela near Slovenj Gradec. During the Second World War he was initially imprisoned again, but was then deported to Croatia in 1941 . After stays in Bosnia and Belgrade , he returned to Slovenia to the Cistercian monastery of Stična . In 1945 he was back in Sela until his death.

Meško started out with poetry , but then wrote mainly prose . His realistic works deal with themes from his Slovenian homeland in a catholic and national spirit. He also wrote plays and children's books. Most of his works were written before 1945. There are almost no translations into German.
