Francesco Carracci

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Francesco Carracci (* 1595 in Bologna , † June 3, 1622 in Rome ) was an Italian painter , draftsman and engraver.

Francesco Carracci was the son of Giovanni Antonio Carracci and nephew of Agostino and Annibale Carracci . He must have shown his interest in art at an early age and possessed a certain talent, because he was soon accepted into the workshop of Ludovico Carracci . Here it turned out that his talent did not extend beyond a few hopeful beginnings. However, the sources report that he was a skilled draftsman and was reasonably appreciated for it. The extent to which this assessment is correct is difficult to assess today, as only one drawing, a male nude in the British Museum in London, is unreservedly ascribed to him.

Francesco seems to have been a hot-headed character. Numerous arguments with the family are documented. Because of disagreements with his teacher, he left his workshop and moved to Rome. There he hoped to benefit from the fame of his name. But there it quickly became apparent that his talent did not meet the demands of the client. Shortly afterwards, he died almost penniless.

Only a few works are still considered to be handwritten today. Most of them originated in Bologna.
