Francesco Maria Banditi OTheat (born September 8, 1706 in Rimini , † January 27, 1796 in Benevento ) was a cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

His family belonged to the patriciate of Rimini. After joining the Order of Theatine (1723), he received the August 14, 1729 ordination . He spent his religious life in the Theatine Convent of S. Antonio da Padova in Rimini, where he was twice elected superior . He also took care of the restoration of the convent library and its equipping with new books. Several times he took part as a delegate to the general chapters of the order, in 1768 he was elected superior general. Among other things, in this office he published a circular to the religious houses about the Theatin missions in Goa .

At the end of his three-year term in office, he returned to Rimini in May 1771, and in January of the following year he was appointed Bishop of Montefiascone and Corneto by Pope Clement XIV , his schoolmate in Rimini . After his episcopal ordination on April 5, 1772 by Cardinal Lazzaro Opizio Pallavicini , he accepted the profession of the first Passionists on May 20 , whose founder Maria Crocifissa di Gesù he provided spiritual and material support. Since then he has also maintained close relationships with Paul von Kreuz and other Passionist superiors. On July 17, 1775 he was by Pope Pius VI. elevated to cardinal in pectore and published his name on November 13th of the same year. Already on May 29, 1775 appointed Archbishop of Benevento and temporarily administrator of his previous diocese, he was assigned the titular church of San Crisogono as a cardinal priest on December 18, 1775 .

On January 7, 1776, he set out for Benevento, where immediately after his arrival he developed an extensive pastoral activity, so he performed 24,000 confirmations in one year . He had the statutes of the clerical seminary of Benevento, established by Giacomo Savelli and expanded by Vincenzo Maria Orsini , republished in 1782. He completed a number of building projects, including the Ursuline Institute .

The funeral speech in the cathedral of Benevento was held by the rhetoric professor Pier Luigi Castriota.
