Francesco Puttinati (also Putinati ; * around 1775 in Verona , † 1848 in Milan ) was an Italian medalist and sculptor .

life and work

Medal for Antonio Canova

Francesco Puttinati worked as a medal die cutter in the then Austrian mint of Milan. He created personal medals, including portraits of Pope Leo XII. , Duke Franz IV of Modena, Archduke Rainer , Karl Albert of Savoy , Leonardo da Vinci , Titian , Antonio Canova , the coronation medal of Emperor Ferdinand I , further medals for the construction of bridges, the cathedral of Milan, the port of Trieste and religious medals. He was particularly known for the so-called black medals, which had a particularly dark patina and which were created in the early 19th century by medalists in the mints of Milan and Venice.

His son Alessandro Puttinati  worked as a sculptor in Milan.
