Francesco Saverio Romano (born December 24, 1964 in Palermo ) is an Italian politician ( UDC , Cantiere Popolare ). From March to November 2011 he was Minister of Agriculture and Forestry under Silvio Berlusconi .

Life

Romano graduated from the University of Palermo with a law degree . He began his political career as a member of the Democrazia Cristiana (DC) and was regional secretary of their youth organization in Sicily. He was elected to the Provincial Council of Palermo in 1990 and was an alderman for the provincial road network from 1993–94. After the DC collapsed in 1994, it belonged initially to the PPI and from 1995 to the Cristiani Democratici Uniti (CDU). The Sicilian regional government appointed him President of the Istituto Regionale per il Credito alla Cooperazione (IRCAC) in 1997, which he held until 2001.

In the 2001 general election he was elected as a direct candidate in the constituency of Bagheria in the Camera dei deputati (Chamber of Deputies) of the Italian Parliament. From 2002 to 2010 he was a member of the Unione di Centro (UDC). In 2008, Romano was the UDC's spokesman on the finance committee.

In autumn 2010 Romano left the UDC and founded the small Christian Democratic party I Popolari di Italia Domani (PID), which supported the Berlusconi government. In January 2011 he joined the Iniziativa Responsabile faction (later renamed Popolo e Territorio ), which brought together MPs who expressed their confidence in Berlusconi without belonging to his party, the PdL or the Lega Nord . As the successor to Giancarlo Galan , he was Minister of Agriculture in Italy from March 23, 2011 to November 16, 2011. He was followed in office by Mario Catania . In January 2012, PID merged with other Christian Democratic and regional splinter parties to form Cantiere Popolare , which Romano has headed ever since. In 2012–13, Romano was the spokesman for the Popolo e Territorio group in the Foreign and European Committee.

In the 2013 parliamentary election , Romano was re-elected to the list of the PdL. The PID joined In autumn 2013 as an associated party Forza Italia (successor party of the PdL). In September 2015 Romano left the Forza Italia group again. In October 2016 Romano joined the Scelta Civica –Ala per la Costituente Liberale e Popolare– MAIE group , of which he was chairman from November 2016 until the end of the legislative period. From October 2016 to February 2017 he was also spokesman for his parliamentary group in the Finance Committee, then until December 2017 in the Transport and Communications Committee. In the 2018 parliamentary election , he ran as a direct candidate in the constituency of Corleone , but was defeated by the candidate of the five-star movement and thus left parliament. For the European elections in 2019 , he entered the Forza Italia list in the constituency of the Italian islands, but was also unsuccessful.
