Francis Xavier D'Sa

Francis Xavier D'Sa SJ (born November 29, 1936 in Gokak Falls, Belgaum District , British India ) is an Indian Jesuit and university teacher.

Life

Francis Xavier D'Sa comes from a Christian family in Goa for centuries . At the age of 17 he entered the Jesuit order in Bombay . He studied philosophy in Pune , then theology in Innsbruck . In 1967 he was ordained a priest. This was followed by a doctoral degree in Indology with Gerhard Oberhammer at the University of Vienna .

In 1973 he returned to India and founded the Institute for the Study of Religion at the Pontifical College Jnana-Deepa Vidyapeeth in Pune, an institution for the study of Hindu traditions and the promotion of interreligious and intercultural dialogue.

In addition to his teaching and research activities in Pune, Francis D'Sa repeatedly held teaching assignments in Innsbruck and Frankfurt, in Friborg, Salzburg, Tübingen and Würzburg.

From 2003 to 2008 he was a professor at the endowed chair for missiology and dialogue of religions at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg .

On December 1, 2016, he and Gregory Baum received an honorary doctorate from the Catholic Theological Faculty of the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen . They were honored for their perseverance in promoting interreligious and intercultural dialogue .
