Francisco Aguabella
Francisco Aguabella (* 10. October 1925 in Matanzas , Cuba; † 7 May 2010 in Los Angeles , USA) was an Afro-Cuban Latin jazz - drummer and percussionist .
biography
Aguabella was best known as a session musician for artists in rock, latin and jazz; In the early 1960s, he worked with Barney Kessel . He wrote the drums on the Doors ' albums Other Voices (1971) , Joe Henderson ( Canyon Lady , 1973), Mongo Santamaría , Tito Puente , Bobby Hutcherson and Paul Simon's The Rhythm of the Saints from 1990. Also together he performed with Dizzy Gillespie and Frank Sinatra . Aguabella last lived in Los Angeles. In 1992 he received a "National Heritage Fellowship" from the " National Endowment for the Arts ". He taught Afro-Cuban drums at the University of California .
Dizzy Gillespie said of Aguabella: "Aguabella is the John Coltrane of the Conga Drums ".
Aguabella died of cancer at the age of 84.
