Francisco Solano Constâncio

Francisco Solano Constâncio (born July 24, 1777 in Lisbon , † December 21, 1846 in Paris ) was a Portuguese diplomat , Romance scholar , Lusitanist , grammarian, lexicographer and translator .

Life

Constâncio studied medicine in Edinburgh , but then went into exile as a liberal in Paris. In 1815 he published the magazine O observador lusitano em Pariz, ou Collecção literaria, politica e commercial , then the works of Manuel do Nascimento , from 1818 to 1822 the Annaes das Sciencias, the Artes e das Letras . In 1820 he took on diplomatic tasks, first in Paris, then as Portuguese ambassador to the United States. In 1829 he returned to Paris and lived there until his death as a versatile homme de lettres .

Constâncio translated economic writings by David Ricardo , Thomas Robert Malthus and William Godwin , as well as pharmaceuticals, from English into French. He published successful foreign language grammars of French, Portuguese and English, as well as an often published dictionary of Portuguese, as well as a bilingual French-Portuguese dictionary.
