Franciszek Ksawery Alter (born November 22, 1889 in Lemberg , Austria-Hungary , † January 23, 1945 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen ) was a Polish brigadier general .

Life

Alter trained as an officer in the land forces of Austria-Hungary and took part in the First World War. He joined the Land Forces of the Second Polish Republic in 1918 and took part in the Polish-Soviet War from 1919 to 1921 . After being promoted to lieutenant colonel on June 1, 1922, he succeeded Lieutenant Colonel Włodzimierz Maxymowicz-Raczyński from August 1922 to January 1931, commander of the 77th  Infantry Regiment (77 Pułk Piechoty), and on January 1, 1927, he was also a colonel promoted. Then he was the successor to Colonel Władysław Bortnowski from January 1931 to November 1932 for the first time commander of the 14th  Infantry Division (14 Dywizja Piechoty) . Between August 1934 and 1935 he was again commander of the 14th Infantry Division and later, as the successor to Brigadier General Michał Tokarzewski-Karaszewicz, from 1936 to 1939, commanding general of the 25th Infantry Division (25 Dywizja Piechoty) . On March 19, 1939, he was promoted to Brigadier General.

At the beginning of World War II in the invasion of Poland came age in that capacity in 1939 in German POW camp , where he died on 23 January 1945th

For his many years of military service, Alter was awarded the Virtuti Militari and the Order of Polonia Restituta , among others .
