Life

Leja studied mathematics, physics and philosophy at the Jan Kazimierz University in Lemberg until 1909 under Józef Puzyna (1856-1919) and Marian Smoluchowski (1872-1917), among others .

From 1910 to 1923 Leja was a high school teacher for mathematics and physics in Cracow. He then became a professor at the Technical University of Warsaw in 1924 and at the Jagiellonian University in 1936 . On November 6, 1939, he and 183 other Krakow professors were arrested as part of the Krakow special campaign and deported to Sachsenhausen concentration camp , where he was imprisoned until May 1940. After his release, he became involved in the underground university and wrote mathematical textbooks. From 1948 he worked in the Mathematics Institute of the Polska Akademia Nauk . He was a co-founder of the Polish Mathematical Society in 1919 and its president from 1963 to 1965. In 1931 he became a member of the Warsaw Scientific Society .
