The Polish Mathematical Society was founded in 1919 with the aim of a comprehensive cultivation of pure and applied mathematics through scientific conferences and publications. The founding members included Stefan Banach , Franciszek Leja , Otton Marcin Nikodým , Stanisław Zaremba and Kazimierz Żorawski , Stanisław Zaremba was elected the first president. In 1921 the association was given its current name with headquarters in Krakow . Memberships not based in Kraków were organized through sections, initially Lwów from 1921 and Warsaw, Poznań and Wilno from 1923.

During the Second World War Poland came under German occupation and all work of the PTM came to a standstill, only secret scientific meetings in Warsaw and Krakow were possible.

The second active phase began with the presidency of Kazimierz Kuratowski (1945–1953), the sections in Krakow, Warsaw and Poznań were reactivated, and six new ones were founded. Despite the establishment of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN) in 1952, the PTM continued to grow; the Toruń , Katowice and Szczecin sections were added in the first half of the 1950s, and more followed in the 1970s.

Since the beginning of its foundation, the organization of scientific conferences and assemblies has been one of the main tasks of the PTM. Even before the war, over 1000 scientific lectures were counted, and between 1948 and 2003 around 10,000 scientific lectures were held; the speakers came from over 40 countries.

According to the founding statutes, the publication activity is the second important task of the PTM. Today (2008) the six periodicals Commentationes Mathematicae , Wiadomości Matematyczne , Matematyka Stosowana , Fundamenta Informaticae , Dydaktyka Matematyki and Antiquitates Mathematicae appear ; in addition there is the popular scientific monthly Delta published in cooperation with the Polish Physical Society and the Association of Polish Astronomers .

The Polish Mathematical Society works with the American Mathematical Society and the Canadian Mathematical Society and is one of the founding members of the European Mathematical Society, founded in 1990 .

The PTM has been awarding the Stefan Banach Prize since 1946 .
