The Francois barracks is a former barracks in the Lamboy district of the city of Hanau .

history

In 1891 Prussia was looking for a location for the Thuringian Uhlan Regiment No. 6 . Since both the old and the new town of Hanau offered little free space for such a project, those responsible opted for an almost undeveloped area east of Friedberger Strasse. The Ulanen barracks, completed in 1894, consisted of administration buildings and feed reservoirs for the horses. Around 1900 a settlement was built around the barracks, today's Lamboyviertel.

The Uhlan Regiment was stationed in the barracks until the end of the First World War , after which it was disbanded and the barracks stood empty. In 1937 the Wehrmacht moved into the barracks and stationed the regimental staff as well as the 13th and 14th companies of the 88th Infantry Regiment. In contrast to the other barracks in Lamboy, the Uhlan barracks remained undamaged in World War II . After the war, the US occupation forces initially used it as a warehouse for displaced persons . The US Army then moved into the barracks, and at the same time the barracks were renamed Francois barracks . This served as a base for several batteries and troops.

conversion

In 1991 the US Army vacated the Francois barracks. The site then stood empty for years. Since the Lamboyviertel has meanwhile become a city quarter with a high proportion of socially disadvantaged residents, the area was given little chance for future use. It was not until the State Horticultural Show in Hanau in 2002 that plans came up to hold the event on the former site of the Francois barracks. To this end, extensive renovation work took place in 1998. At the same time, a new housing estate was built in the southern part of the barracks.

Today the former Francois barracks is characterized by a mixture of residential and commercial spaces. In addition to a kindergarten and a branch of the Tümpelgartenschule , the Hanau Adult Education Center is located here.

Monument protection

The Francois barracks is a cultural monument according to the Hessian Monument Protection Act .
