Frank Benseler

Frank Benseler (born September 22, 1929 in Remscheid , † December 22, 2021 in Borchen ) was a German sociologist and professor at the University of Paderborn .

Life

BENSELER was at the 1958 University of Cologne with a thesis on the dictatorship of the proletariat in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia doctorate .

For many years he worked as a prominent publisher of social science works at Luchterhand Verlag , from 1967 as chief editor . The Sociological Texts series published there by him, together with Heinz Maus and Friedrich Fürstenberg , from 1959 , with a total of 103 volumes, was at that time the most respected series of sociological publications in the Federal Republic of Germany. For the first time, the series also brought French and English-speaking sociologists - such as the authors Émile Durkheim , Lucien Goldmann , Eric Hobsbawm , Seymour Martin Lipset , Charles Wright Mills , William Fielding Ogburn and Talcott Parsons - closer to the German-speaking audience. In this series, Herbert Marcuse's American publications also appeared in German translation for the first time in the early 1960s.

In 1972 Benseler was appointed to a chair for sociology at the University of Paderborn, which he held until his retirement (1994). His main focus was on the sociology of literature and the history of sociology .

Benseler was editor of Georg Lukács' edition of works and initiator of the journal project Erwiegen Wissen Ethik as well as co-editor of the journal Demokratische Erziehung .

Frank Benseler was a member of the PEN Center Germany .
