Frank Hoppensteadt

Frank Charles Hoppensteadt (born April 29, 1938 in Oak Park , Illinois ) is an American mathematician who studies biomathematics .

Frank Hoppensteadt studied physics and mathematics at Butler University with a bachelor's degree in 1960 and at the University of Wisconsin – Madison , where he received his master's degree in 1962 and received his doctorate in 1965 under Fred Guenther Brauer ( Singular Perturbations on the Infinite Interval ) . From 1965 he was Assistant Professor at Michigan State University in East Lansing , from 1968 Associate Professor and later Professor at New York University ( Courant Institute , until 1979) and from 1977 to 1986 Professor at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City , where he also headed the mathematics faculty. From 1986 he was Dean of the College of Natural Science at Michigan State University and from 2004 Professor of Mathematics and Electrical Engineering at Arizona State University and Director of the Center for System Science and Engineering Research .

He deals with various aspects of theoretical biology such as neural networks, the spread of diseases, population dynamics.

Hoppensteadt was a Christenson Fellow at St Catharine's College , Oxford and is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science .

In 1998 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Berlin ( Canonical models in mathematical neuroscience , with Eugene Izhikevich).
