Frank McGlynn Sr.
Frank McGlynn senior (born October 26, 1866 in San Francisco , California , † May 18, 1951 in Newburgh , New York ) was an American actor .
life and career
Frank McGlynn was born the eldest of four children to a carpenter. His ancestors came from Ireland . First he graduated from the University of California and he worked as a lawyer from 1894. But soon after, McGlynn decided to work as an actor and moved with theater groups across America. In 1911 he made his film debut in the silent film Nell's Last Deal and starred in almost 140 films over the next few decades up to 1947. With his tall, lean figure, Frank McGlynn had a striking resemblance to US President Abraham Lincoln , whom he played in the theater in 1919, including in John Drinkwater's play Abraham Lincoln . The play had nearly 200 performances in two years. He also played Abraham Lincoln in ten films and once an actor who played Lincoln.
In the 1920s, McGlynn worked mainly on Broadway in eight plays. In 1924 he played the lead role in the silent film Abraham Lincoln by James Searle Dawley , based on Drinkwater's piece. With the introduction of the sound film, he played regularly in Hollywood, where he mostly played supporting roles. In addition to appearances as Abraham Lincoln, he often played honorable figures such as pastors or judges. McGlynn played more often in smaller westerns . In the 1940s he increasingly withdrew from the acting business.
Frank McGlynn Sr. died in 1951 at the age of 84 at his daughter's home. He had five children with his wife, Rose, who died before him. His son Frank McGlynn Jr. (1904–1939) also worked as an actor in 40 films between 1924 and 1938. He was buried in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California.
