Frank O'Beirne
Frank O'Beirne (* 1903 in Biloxi , Mississippi ; † October 19, 1998 ) was an American officer in the United States Navy and until 1963 in command of the Atlantic Fleet's Navy air forces ( COMNAVAIRLANT ) with the rank of Vice Admiral .
Life
Youth and school
O'Beirne was born in Mississippi and raised in Elgin Illinois . He graduated from the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland in 1926 and made a master's degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Michigan .
Military career
- He flew with Col. Charles Lindbergh as part of the Navy's aerial acrobatics program.
- commanding officer of a reconnaissance unit during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941.
- 1948 to 1950 deputy naval attachee in London.
- commanding officer of the USS Midway from April 2, 1952 to April 4, 1953
- Work for the Joint Chiefs of Staff .
- Commander of the Armed Forces Special Weapons Project (AFSWP) at Sandia Base , Albuquerque , New Mexico .
He was awarded the Legion of Merit , the Bronze Star with Combat V and the Air Medal .
Career in business
After retiring from the military in 1963, he was a consultant for North American Aviation Inc. and ARINC Research Corp. (ARINC).
Private
O'Beirne enjoyed playing golf, taking photos, and doing genealogy . Most recently he lived in McLean, Virginia . He died of multiple organ failure on October 19, 1998 at Inova Fairfax Hospital and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery on November 16, 1998 .
