Frank O'Farrell

Francis O'Farrell (born October 9, 1927 in Cork ) is a retired Irish football player and football coach.

Career

Player career

O'Farrell began his playing career at Cork United in Ireland . In 1948 he moved to West Ham United . In 1950, the left midfielder made his West Ham debut. He stayed in London for six years . During this time he also made his team debut for the Irish national soccer team against Austria , eight further appearances followed. In November 1956, the Irishman went on to Preston North End . O'Farrell played in Preston until his retirement in 1961 . In 1961 he was short-term player-coach at Weymouth FC.

Coaching career

His first coaching job was at Weymouth FC as a player coach. In May 1965 he became head coach for the first time. He became the coach of Torquay United . After three years in Torquay , I went to Leicester City . He stayed with Leicester City until 1971. That year came an offer from Manchester United , which O'Farrell immediately accepted, but his time at ManU was overshadowed by the excesses of superstar George Best , who undermined his authority as a coach. In December 1972 he gave up and went to Cardiff City a year later , which he left for Asia in 1973. O'Farrell was the coach of the Iranian national team , with which he won the 1976 Asian Cup. After his stay in Iran, he came back to Torquay United, where he worked alternately as a manager or coach from 1976 to 1983. The Irishman has been retiring in Torquay since then.
