Frank Lander Saul (born August 23, 1943 in Canvey Island ) is a former English football player . As an offensive man who could be used in the center and on the wing, he was initially a substitute player in the team from Tottenham Hotspur , which won the English championship in 1961 . His greatest achievement was winning the FA Cup in 1967 , when he contributed a goal to the 2-1 win in the final against Chelsea .
Athletic career
Saul grew up on Canvey Island, where the Thames meets the North Sea, and started playing football at home at the age of nine. He initially held the position of left outer runner , from where he was later developed into a center forward . His coach at the time was Sonny Hesketh, a former Tottenham Hotspur player who enabled his protégé to play for the "Spurs" on his 15th birthday. This was successful and a year later Saul made his debut in the reserve team of Tottenham. In addition, played for the English youth selection games in Austria, Italy, Germany and the Netherlands.
On his 17th birthday Saul signed a professional contract and two weeks later he made his debut for the first team in the game at the Bolton Wanderers . Here he had the task of representing the top scorer Bobby Smith and although he had no goal of his own, the game was won 2-1. The "redhead" had aroused expectations with his nimble movements and quick perception and only fulfilled them for three days by scoring his first goal in the derby against Arsenal (3-2). Ultimately, he was used six times in the 1960/61 season, which brought Tottenham the double from the English championship and cup . He scored three goals and remained undefeated (with only one draw). However, this was not enough for an official title medal. From the shadow of his teammates, whether in the attacking center or on the wing behind players like Terry Medwin or Cliff Jones , he stepped for the first time in the 1964/65 season, when he scored eleven goals in 23 league games. Two years later he made a significant contribution to winning the FA Cup . Here he completed the last four rounds and scored three goals, including the goal to 2-0 against Chelsea in the final (final score 2: 1). In January 1968 he then moved in exchange with Martin Chivers to league rivals FC Southampton .
Saul stayed with the "Saints" for two years before he went one league lower back to London to the Queens Park Rangers in May 1970 . Here, too, he stayed for almost two years and in March 1972 he was hired by the also second-rate London rival Millwall FC . Here he was relegated to the third division with his men in 1975 , but corrected this the following year - his last professional year - with the direct return to promotion . Outside of professional football, Saul then ended his career in the Isthmian League at Dagenham FC .
