Here he fought a duel with Terry Dyson for the place on the outside lane.

1958 national coach Jimmy Murphy nominated him alongside his club mate Mel Hopkins in the squad for the World Cup finals in Sweden. After playing in the first group matches against Hungary and Mexico , he and Colin Webster were replaced in the attack line for the final game against Sweden by Ron Hewitt and Roy Vernon, respectively. Thanks to a 0-0 draw, the team was ultimately level on points with Hungary, so it came to a play-off. In the Malmö Stadium , he scored the decisive goal in the 76th minute of the game to make it 2-1, but in the quarter-final match against eventual world champions Brazil the team was unlucky.

In the fall of the year Bill Nicholson took over the coaching position at his London club. Initially still regular, Medwin lost his place to Dyson in 1960, but was still used regularly. Thus, he also contributed to winning the second championship title in the club's history and was one of those awarded the championship medal. In the cup final against Leicester City , his coach preferred Dyson, who, alongside Bobby Smith, contributed to the 2-0 success as a goal scorer. At the side of Danny Blanchflower , Jimmy Greaves , Dave Mackay and his compatriot Cliff Jones , he was again in the starting line-up in the following year when he successfully defended his title thanks to a 3-1 victory over Burnley FC . In 1963 he broke his leg on a tour of South Africa that forced him to retire . For the Welsh national team he had so far scored six goals in 30 international matches, for his London club he had scored 72 goals in a total of 215 games.

Later Medwin was part of the coaching staff of Fulham FC . As an assistant coach, he worked under John Toshack for his hometown club Swansea City. In 1971 he was part of the coaching staff of a Welsh national team supervised by Dave Bowen on a tour of Asia .
