Ronald "Ron" Hewitt (born June 21, 1928 in Flint , † September 23, 2001 ) was a Welsh football player . Although only active as a player in lower-class English football, he was a Welsh national player for the 1958 World Cup .

biography

Hewitt was initially under contract with Wolverhampton Wanderers , but under coach Stan Cullis he was not used in the First Division . In the meantime, he was awarded in 1949 to FC Walsall in the Third Division . Even after his return without playing, he moved in 1950 to Darlington FC , which he left after a season in the direction of AFC Wrexham . In the Third Division North he established himself as a regular and shone as a regular goalscorer. He was active for the club until 1957 and won the league's top scorer title three times. He made a name for himself at Cardiff City in the second-rate Second Division . Here, too, he was an excellent goal scorer and in his two years with the club the best club internal scorer. His goal threat did not escape the Football Association of Wales and in 1958 he made his debut for the national team. In the same year he was part of the squad at the World Cup tournament in Sweden and stood alongside John Charles , Ivor Allchurch , Cliff Jones , Roy Vernon and Terry Medwin in two group games and the quarter-final against Brazil in the attack row on the field.

In 1959, Hewitt returned to Wrexham AFC, but this time only stayed one season. As a result, he changed clubs frequently. First he ran for Coventry City and Chester City before kicking the ball in non-league football . There he was active for Hereford United , Northwich Victoria and Witton Albion . In 1966 he moved to the Welsh club Caernarfon Town , but after a season he returned to English non-league football and ended his career at Congleton Town after a year at Barmouth & Dyffryn United in 1971 .

Hewitt worked at BICC Cables in Wrexham. He died in autumn 2001 at the age of 73.
