The Frankenstein is a 342.7 m high mountain on the northern outskirts of Bad Salzungen in the Wartburg district in Thuringia . It is located in the Salzunger Werrabergland between the moorland and the Werra valley on the boundary of the monastery district , which got its name from the former Allendorf monastery at the foot of the elevation .

The name of the mountain refers to the medieval Frankenstein Castle located near the summit . The Frankenstein is crowned by the castle ruins from the 13th century, of which only small remains of buildings as well as ditches and earth walls can be seen, as well as a "Frankenstein art ruin" - it was built by the Frankenstein Association as a place for excursions. During the GDR era, a company holiday camp , transmitter masts and a hotel on the edge of an abandoned, renatured quarry were built around the art ruins .
