Franklin Allen

Franklin Allen (born March 6, 1956 in Amersham , Buckinghamshire , United Kingdom ) is a British economist .

Career

Allen studied economics and computer science at the University of East Anglia until 1977 . Then he made up his 1979 Master of Philosophy at the University of Oxford under the direction of Joseph E. Stiglitz , before 1980 doctoral supervisor James Mirrlees as a Ph.D. graduated.

Allen has been at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School since 1980 . From September of that year to summer 1986 as an assistant professor , then with changing responsibilities as an associate professor . In 1990 he was appointed full professor and at the same time deputy dean and director of the doctoral program. In January 1994, he was appointed to the Nihon Seimei Hoken- sponsored Nippon Life Chair at the Wharton School. At the same time he was a guest lecturer on various continents a. a. at the Stockholm School of Business , Indian School of Business , Princeton University and Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Frankfurt am Main . Allen has been a professor at Imperial College since 2014 .

In addition to his research and teaching activities, Allen has held various managerial positions at national and international research institutions. Between 1996 and 1997 he was director and 2000 president of the American Finance Association . At the same time, he headed the Society for Financial Studies between 1996 and 1999 . Between 2007 and 2008 he was President of the International Atlantic Economic Society . In 2017 Allen was elected a member of the British Academy .

From 1994 to 1997 he headed the prestigious journal The Review of Financial Studies as editor ( editor ).

research

Allen's work focuses on corporate finance , company valuation and information economics . Since 2007 he has published several books on the financial crisis from 2007 . He has also been one of the lead authors alongside Richard A. Brealey and Stewart C. Myers since the eighth edition of Principles of Corporate Finance , a standard work in corporate finance, published in 2005 .

Allen is on the Advisory Board of Fair Observer .
