Frans Grootjans

Frans Edward Elisabeth Grootjans (born January 24, 1922 in Antwerpen-Wilrijk , Province of Antwerp , Belgium ; † February 20, 1999 in Antwerp, Province of Antwerp, Belgium) was a Belgian politician of the Partij voor Vrijheid en Vooruitgang (PVV).

biography

After graduating, he studied commercial management and consulting science and graduated with a licentiate . Later he was editor-in-chief and director of the daily newspaper De Nieuwe Gazet .

He began his political career as a candidate for the PVV in 1954, when he was elected a member of the Chamber of Deputies , in which he represented the interests of the Antwerp arrondissement until 1987 .

In March 1966 he was appointed Minister for National Education by Prime Minister Paul Vanden Boeynants in his government and was a member of this until the end of his term in June 1968.

In 1971 he also became a member of the Antwerp Municipal Council and was a member of it until 1976. In addition, he was from 1973 to 1977 as the successor to Willy De Clercq for the first time party chairman of the PVV and was then replaced by De Clercq in this function.

For his political services he was awarded the honorary title of Minister of State on October 18, 1974 .

On January 6, 1985, he was appointed by Prime Minister Wilfried Martens as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance and Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises in his cabinet, although he was only a member until November 28, 1985. He was then President of the Flemish Parliament from 1985 to 1987 .
