OFMCap , also Latinized as Franciscus Titelmannus , (* 1502 in Hasselt ; † September 12, 1537 in Anticoli ( Latium )) was a Belgian theologian , exegete and philosopher . In 1523 Titelmans joined the Franciscan Observants . In 1536 he switched to the Capuchins .

life and work

Titelmans studied philosophy at the University of Leuven and obtained his Magister Artium there in 1521. He completed theological studies with the Franciscan Observants .

He first taught philosophy at the Franciscan convent in Leuven, and from 1527 theology, especially Bible exegesis. Under the influence of the Löwen theologian Jacobus Latomus , Titelmans preferred the Vulgate for his exegetical work . Titelmans criticized humanists like Lorenzo Valla , Faber Stapulensis and Erasmus von Rotterdam and came into conflict with them, especially with regard to the interpretation of the Pauline letters . In 1536 Titelmans went to Italy and became a nurse there. Titelman's works, especially his works on natural philosophy, received numerous reprints in the 16th century.
