Frans van der Lugt

Frans van der Lugt SJ (born April 10, 1938 in The Hague , Netherlands ; † April 7, 2014 in Homs , Syria ) was a Dutch Jesuit and psychotherapist .

Life

Frans van der Lugt was the son of Godefridus Wilhelmus Antonius van der Lugt, director of the Nederlandsche Landbouwbank , and Maria Josepha Wilhelmina Duijnstee. His brother Godfried van der Lugt worked in a leading position at the Dutch Postbank and the ING Groep .

Frans came on September 7, 1959, the Congregation for the Jesuits. He was active in the mission, especially in school and education. He learned Arabic in Lebanon from 1964 to 1966 and was a member of the Order of the Middle East and Maghreb Province . He was ordained a priest on May 29, 1971 .

Frans van der Lugt lived in Syria since 1966 and was involved in many aid projects. In Homs he founded an agricultural project "Al Ard" (The Earth) for the mentally handicapped in the 1980s. In 1992, he was awarded Knight of the Order of Orange-Nassau , the Dutch Order of Merit , for his commitment .

He was seen as a mediator between rebels and the Syrian government in the civil war in Syria and was committed to the population. He made the Jesuit monastery available to refugees. In video messages he warned of the lack of food and medicine and turned against the ongoing siege of Homs.

Frans van der Lugt was the only Jesuit still living in Homs. On April 7, 2014, he was beaten by an unidentified rifleman from the al-Nusra Front in front of the religious headquarters in Homs and then killed with two headshots. Pope Francis thereupon again called on April 9, 2014 in the general audience in front of 50,000 people on St. Peter's Square in Rome to end the war in Syria.
