Franscope was an anamorphic film recording process for 35 mm wide screen films introduced in 1956 .
background Early on, Ernst Abbe developed Cinépanoramic, an improvement on the CinemaScope from 20th Century Fox . The French DIC was able to market the process in various countries. With the renaming to Franscope the French market should be covered.
Franscope did not differ much from Cinépanoramic. The picture was taken compressed with a 2: 1 ratio during the recording and reproduced in the 2.35: 1 format during the presentation . The anamorphic lens required for recording and demonstration had additional optics to enable distortion-free close-ups. This look was simplified in 1958 with the Suprématic by Jean Dicop.
Franscope became the most successful scope format in France alongside DyaliScope. In addition to productions by Nouvelle Vague , it also included commercially successful films with Louis de Funès . The process was also used in German cinemas in the 1960s.
