action

The naive bachelor Antoine Maréchal had a very different start to his vacation. Before he and his rickety car from Paris gen Italy can break, there will be a collision with the road cruisers of the entrepreneur Leopold Saroyan. After that, Antoine's small car is only worth scrap.

After initial arguments, Saroyan, who caused the accident, finally gives in. The seedy director of an import-export company not only gives Maréchal a ticket to Naples as compensation , but also offers him a free return trip. All that Maréchal needs to do is transfer a luxury Cadillac convertible to Bordeaux .

What Antoine does not know, however, is that the Cadillac is bulging with contraband items made up of gold, diamonds and drugs that Saroyan has hidden in the car. Maréchal is the unsuspecting tool that is supposed to unconsciously bring the prohibited goods across the border. But it's not just Saroyan, who is secretly watching Antoine, that is tracking the car; Maréchal and the Cadillac have also targeted a gang of gangsters around the stutterer Mickey.

Meanwhile, Maréchal is enjoying his tour of the beautiful Italian countryside. The man in his prime is noticeably reviving and letting his charm play out. In Rome he made the acquaintance of a young French hotel employee, later he was kept company by a no less attractive student whom he took with him as a hitchhiker.

In the course of the voyage there were a number of incidents in which the smuggled goods were almost completely lost - albeit unnoticed by the pursuers. When the Cadillac is finally felted by French customs, it appears completely "clean". Maréchal has since found out what game was being played with him and ensures that both the stutterer and Saroyan and his people are arrested. When he finally discovers the only piece that has not yet been lost in the car, the largest diamond in the world, and hands it over to the police, he is certain to be rewarded with 10 million francs.

criticism

The lexicon of international films saw an "amusing rogue comedy".

The Protestant film observer is full of praise : "Thanks to ingenuity, speedy directing and a good cast, an extremely enjoyable film entertainment was possible, which is possible from 14 onwards, and definitely recommended from 16 onwards."

Trivia

  • A year later, Louis de Funès and André Bourvil also appeared together in the war comedy Die Große Sause , which is one of the most successful French productions. In 1971 a third collaboration between the two was planned in The Stupid Pranks of the Rich . After Bourvil's death before shooting began, this could no longer be realized.
  • The film was initially released in Germany under the title Sharp Things for Monsieur . Here de Funès was dubbed by Anton Reimer . It was not until a few years later that the strip was re-performed with the new title Louis, the rascal . He got a new synchronization, this time with Gerd Martienzen .
