František Štorm

František Štorm (also: Franta Štorm , born July 3, 1966 in Prague ) is a Czech type designer and musician. Part-time singer and guitarist for the Czech metal band Master's Hammer , his professional fame is based primarily on his writings , which he distributes through FontShop and his own label, the Storm Type Foundry.

biography

After attending vocational school (from 1981), Štorm studied book and font design under Prof. Jan Solpera from 1985 at the Prague University of Applied Arts (Vysoká škola uměleckoprůmyslová, abbreviated: VŠUP) . After graduating in 1991, he worked there as an assistant until 1995. Today he heads the typography studio at VŠUP. Not satisfied with the fonts on his first Apple Macintosh , a Mac II vi, he began developing his own fonts. In 1993 he started his own business with the Storm Type Foundry. In his writings, he places particular emphasis on the harmonious placement of the diacritical marks required for the Central European languages . Many of his writings are carefully modernized versions of designs from different eras; among other things, he designed his own versions of the fonts Walbaum , Jannon and Baskerville . In the last years of his life, he digitized and revised several of Týfa's classic designs with Josef Týfa . He also digitized the writings of his teacher Jan Solpera and the writings of Vojtěch Preissig .

Štorm lives and works in South Bohemia . In addition to his work, he is the singer and guitarist of the Czech metal band Master's Hammer. As a graphic artist, he designed the art of several Czech bands.
