František Skorkovský

František Skorkovský ( October 1, 1909 in Trieste , Austria-Hungary - November 17, 1939 in Prague ) was a Czech student leader. He was arrested by the Gestapo in the course of the special action in Prague and executed immediately afterwards.

Life

František Skorkovský was the oldest child of František Skorkovský and Anna Skorkovská, née Bolincová. He had a younger brother and sister. Skorkovský's father was the head of a branch of the Živnostenská banka commercial bank in Trieste . In 1928 the family moved to Brno because the father became a bank director there. Skorkovský became a member of Sokol Brno I studied at the Masaryk University Law ( Promotion on November 11, 1937). Until 1937 he was a member of the nationalist Národní sjednocení ("National Association"), a forerunner of the Party of National Unity - Strana národní jednoty . Then he moved to the club národně socialistických akademiků . From 1937 to 1939 he was chairman of the Central Union of Czechoslovak Students . He was also vice-president of the Confédération internationale des étudiants (CIE). In this position he benefited from his language skills ( German , Italian , French , English , Serbo-Croatian and Slovenian ). In 1939 he became chairman of the foreign department of the National Union of Czech Students in the Reich Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, which had been occupied since March 1939 .

On October 28, 1939, the anniversary of the founding of Czechoslovakia , there were numerous protests and demonstrations against the German occupation forces . During the protests in Prague, the worker Václav Sedláček was shot and the medical student Jan Opletal was shot. Opletal succumbed to his injury on November 11, 1939. Skorkovský took part in the preparations for Opletal's funeral, which took place on November 15, 1939. Groups of students organized a funeral procession through Prague, which was joined by thousands of people and sang the Czech national anthem as they lay out. The response to this was the Prague special . Universities were closed and 1,200 students were arrested. Skorkovský was arrested. Together with eight other student leaders, he was taken to the Prague- Ruzyně barracks and executed without trial .

Since November 17, 1941, the International Students' Day commemorates the student protests in Prague.

Stumbling block for František Skorkovský

The following memorials commemorate František Skorkovský:

  • On November 23, 1947, a memorial plaque was unveiled in Sokol Brno I for the victims of the Second World War, on which František Skorkovský is mentioned by name.
  • On May 5, 1994, a memorial plaque was unveiled in the Faculty of Law of Masaryk University for the victims of the occupation from among the students, employees and teachers of the faculty, on which František Skorkovskýs, among others, is remembered by name.
  • On September 17, 2014, Gunter Demnig laid a stumbling block at Běhounská ul. 1/01 in Brno , where Skorkovský lived.
  • There was a memorial plaque at Skorkovského ul. 15/01 in Brno. This memorial plaque was stolen (probably in 1998).
