Life

Šalda, the son of a post office clerk, began studying law after attending grammar school in Prague in 1886, but did not finish it. In 1918 he passed his exams in philosophy. He then taught as a professor at Charles University in Prague . He initially worked as a journalist and literary critic. In 1899 he fell seriously ill, lost his permanent position and devoted himself entirely to literature.

Works

Šalda, co-author of the Česká moderna Manifesto , was considered a leading figure of the 1890s. His first work appeared in Lumír magazine in 1885. From 1894 to 1908 he wrote literary contributions and articles on international painting for Ottův slovník naučný . In addition, he wrote numerous articles for various magazines in which he dealt with questions and problems of the visual arts, literature and politics. In 1925 he published the critical cultural magazine Tvorba , which Julius Fučík continued after his death . From 1928 to 1937 he also published Šaldův zápisník , in which he practiced art criticism. He also translated works by Philippe Augustin Hennequin and John Ruskin .

His literary works are influenced by positivism . He was one of the most important art critics in the 20s and 30s. With his works he mainly supported young artists. He demanded that art be derived from life and remain free from ideological thoughts. In literary history he is now regarded as the founder of modern Czech cultural criticism.
