The French grunt ( Haemulon flavolineatum ), also known as the yellow grunt fish , is a fish from the sweetlipped and grunt family (Haemulidae).
features
It is fully grown up to 30 cm tall (males). Their bright yellow stripes run slightly diagonally, which makes the animals easily distinguishable from the blue-stripe grunts related to them .
distribution
French grunts are common in the West Atlantic, from the coast of South Carolina to the coast of Brazil, around Bermuda and the West Indies . There they can be found in water depths of up to 60 meters in rock and coral reefs .
Way of life
The French grunt occurs mostly in large schools. It lives under rocky outcrops or corals of the species Acropora palmata , young animals are often found in seagrass meadows . The animals mainly eat small crustaceans . The marine woodlouse Gnathia marleyi is an ectoparasite of the fish.
