Franz Alt (born August 16, 1824 in Vienna ; † February 13, 1914 there ) was an Austrian vedute painter, brother of Rudolf von Alt (1812–1905) and a student of his father Jakob Alt (1789–1872).

Franz Alt studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna with Leopold Kupelwieser and Josef Danhauser .

From 1844 he worked as a freelance artist. Franz Alt went on study trips to Tyrol and northern Italy , and also visited Moscow , St. Petersburg , Paris and London .

Franz Alt was mainly known as a vedute painter . He was friends with Count Kázmér Miklós Esterházy de Galántha (1805-1870) and Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach . Alt created around two thousand watercolors and oil paintings in total.
