Franz Andreas Bauer (born October 4, 1758 in Feldsberg , Moravia , † December 11, 1840 in Kew , London , United Kingdom ) was a painter who mainly made botanical illustrations. His botanical author abbreviation is " FABauer ".

Franz Bauer was the son of Lucas Bauer. The father, court painter to Prince Liechtenstein, died in 1762. Franz later also got a job as a painter for Prince Liechtenstein and soon specialized in depicting plants. His brother, Ferdinand Lukas , was also a botanical illustrator.

In 1788 Franz Bauer went to England, where he got a permanent job as a painter and draftsman at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew through the mediation of Joseph Banks . The salary for the position was sufficient so that Bauer was financially secure and did not have to accept any other orders other than the botanical drawings.

He soon became known and famous for his detailed renderings. For a short time he gave drawing lessons at the English court; For example, Princess Elisabeth and Queen Charlotte colored some of his drawings under his guidance.

For particularly small structures, he used a microscope and also delved into the study and illustration of plant diseases. From 1816, Bauer worked with Everard Home , who studied the anatomical structures of various animals and the human body.

Bauer died in Kew in 1840, after his death numerous originals of his drawings as well as his brother, who had died earlier, were auctioned. Some plant species were named in honor of Bauer, such as Coelia baueriana , Galeandra baueri and Oncidium baueri .
