Franz Christoph Sebastian von Remchingen (born January 20, 1689 - † August 18, 1777 in Valletta ) was Grand Prior of the German Order of Malta from 1775 to 1777 and thus also Prince of Heitersheim .

Life

Christian Sebastian came from the Swabian knight family of the Lords of Remchingen . He was the son of Franz Carl von Remchingen and his wife Maria Franziska von Westernach . In 1717 he entered the Order of Malta.

In 1731 Remchingen was sent to Rome on a diplomatic mission. A report emerged about the conditions in Malta , which discredited the then Grand Master of the Order Antonio Manoel de Vilhena . Remchingen was accused of being involved in a plot against the Grand Master and the Order Council condemned him and had him arrested on his arrival in Malta in 1735. The verdict was initially tempered and ultimately he was pardoned by the Grand Master. From 1721 to 1728 he was Komtur in Überlingen, from 1724 to 1728 Komtur in Wesel and Borken.

From 1754 to 1758 he was under the Grand Master Manuel Pinto de Fonseca as "Grand Bailli" one of the eight conventual Baillis of the order and in this function was responsible for the military fortifications of the order. Another step in his career was that of the (titular) Grand Prior of Hungary (1758–1775). In 1756 he received the commander in Rohrdorf and Dätzingen (until 1769) and in 1775 the commander in Kleinerdlingen near Nördlingen. In March 1775 he was elected Grand Prior of Germany and from then on also called Commander of Coming Bubikon .

Remchingen was buried in St. John's Cathedral in Valletta . With his death in 1777, the von Remchingen family died out in the male line.
