Franz Dünzl

Franz Dünzl (born July 25, 1960 in Regensburg ; † August 23, 2018 ) was a German Catholic church historian .

Life

Franz Dünzl studied Catholic theology at the University of Regensburg and the University of Augsburg and was initially active in pastoral care at the Dominikus ring iron factory in Ursberg . In 1987 he became a research assistant at the Chair for Ancient Church History and Patrology at the University of Regensburg. He became a bride and groom in 1992 with his dissertation . The interpretation of the Canticum by Gregor von Nyssa did his doctorate with Norbert Brox in Regensburg . In 1998 he completed his habilitation at the University of Regensburg with the thesis “Pneuma. Functions of the theological term in early Christian literature ”and received the venia legendi for the field of church and dogma history of antiquity with patrology.

In 2001 he was offered a chair for ancient church history, Christian archeology and patrology at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg . In 2005 Franz Dünzl was awarded the “Prize for good teaching at the state universities in Bavaria” from the Bavarian State Ministry for Education and Culture, Science and Art. From 2011 to 2013 he was dean of the Catholic Theological Faculty.

Dünzl published numerous scientific papers on church history. He was co-editor of the Fontes Christiani series . He was chairman of the Friends of the Eastern Church Institute and member of the institute's scientific advisory board.

Dünzl died on August 23, 2018 after a serious illness. He was buried in the Trinity Mountain Cemetery in Regensburg .
