Franz Eckstein

Franz Erwin Edgar Eckstein (born April 2, 1878 in Leipzig ; † February 1945 in Bauerhufen , Pomerania ) was a German film director who has now been completely forgotten, but is quite productive in silent films .

Life

Eckstein, son of the writer Ernst Eckstein , had completed a university degree and also received his doctorate . At the beginning of the 20th century he worked as a writer and editor. In 1901 he married the butcher's daughter Lina Agnes Frieda Bock, who died in 1910. Shortly afterwards he entered into a marriage with Charlotte Marie Trieloff, which lasted until March 1914. His third marriage that same year was with the actress Rosa Porten . In the middle of the First World War , Eckstein began directing films, often in collaboration with his wife. Rosa Porten initially took on the lead role in these partly humorous, partly melodramatic stories.

After the end of the war, when Rosa Porten hardly filmed any more and instead concentrated on writing scripts, Eckstein also shot with other artists. In 1924 the author Porten and her director ventured into two artistically ambitious literary adaptations, for which Eckstein was able to win Asta Nielsen both times : The Butterfly Battle (based on Hermann Sudermann ) and Hedda Gabler (based on Henrik Ibsen ). Rosa Porten and her husband ended their cinema activity with two films in 1927 and retired to their house in Pomerania. Eckstein died there in February 1945, a few weeks before the invasion of the Soviet Army (April 1945). Towards the end of the same year, Eckstein's widow was expelled to West Germany.
