Franz Gregor Ignaz Eckstein (Czech František Řehoř Ignác Eckstein , Polish Franciszek Grzegorz Ignacy Eckstein , * around 1689 in Židovice near Saatz in Moravia ; † 1741 in Lemberg ) was an Austrian fresco artist who worked in Bohemia , Silesia and Galicia . Father of the painter Sebastian Eckstein.

Live and act

Before 1709 Eckstein was a student of Michael Wenzel Halbax , possibly also studying in Rome. He created illusionistic fresco paintings based on the model of the Italian master Andrea Pozzo . He also created frescoes and altar paintings .

In 1711 he married in Brno , where he took up residence. Since he also took on foreign assignments, he temporarily stayed in other places. From 1727 to 1733 he worked in Cracow and from 1740 to 1741 in Lviv.

His most important works include frescoes in the Loreto Chapel of the Minorite Monastery in Brno, in Milotice Castle , in Pernštejn Castle , in the Kraków Piarist Church and in the Jesuit Church in Lviv.

Among his students was Gottfried Bernhard Göz .
